Review: Legendary from Atari

Time to review another new amBX fully-enabled title and this time is it Legendary from Atari. As with FarCry2 and BiA the loading screens and developer / publisher logos all have amBX enabled effects which immediately show that the game should have some good sequences. Spark and GameCock provide nice yellow / red effects from the lights, Gamespy makes them go green, Atari has red and amBX has the full works; lights, fans and rumbles.

One thing that I love about this game is the music score, especially the main menu sound track. If you have seen the Max Payne film it has that similar style and really grabs you. Moving on from that I have included below a video showing some of the game in action and the interaction between the lights and the game. The other effects (fans / rumbles) are there but as always it depends on what you do when you are playing that triggers them. Explosions and collapsing buildings, or vehicles being thrown by Pandora’s minions will give you some rumble effects.

On the lighting side of things when you get attacked or die the lights go red in line with what you see on the screen whilst flickering lights in subways and tunnels create a similar flickering effect in the lights. One of the best is when you have to do a security override on doors; you press E to start the process and as the wires on the screen fizzle and crackle alternate lights flash white and blue accordingly. Additionally, when you suck energy from dead opponents or from the Animus power balls as your left hand goes out and turns red / yellow to capture the power the left-hand light does the same.

You can see some of this in the video above and this only demonstrates a small portion of the game, I am still waiting to play further and see what other effects there are. Like BiA and CoD4 though this is best played in a dark room with the lights off to get the full feeling, and when things leap out of the walls at you and the lights change it does make you jump.

Overall a pretty cool game, the graphics aren’t quite as good as FarCry2 but the playstyle and the pace are really nice and the interactions with the kit certainly add to the game. So far I am having a lot of fun playing this and that is surprising for a title that has somewhat slipped under the radar.

Your review made me get this game. Glad i did. Where others said it was pants your review gave a much clearer view. Agreed cool game and with full amBX it is a fantastic experience, even for such a low budget style game.
